Pulau Redang (Redang Island) lies about 45 km north-northeast of Kuala Terengganu, the state capital of Terengganu, and about 22 km off Kampong Merang. The Redang archipelago is a cluster of island and islets comprising of Redang, the main island, Lima, Paku Besar, Paku Kecil, Kerengga Kecil, Kerengga Besar, Ekor Tebu, Ling and Pinang. The first settlers of Pulau Redang were believed to be the Bugis seafarers from Celebes, Indonesia. They first settled at Telok Kalong (also called Kampong Lama) and later moved to Pulau Pinang where the Marine Park Centre is located today.

Geographically, Pulau Perhentian (Perhentian Island or more famously called the “Perhentians” by the European visitors) is made up of two island; one being bigger than the other and is 25 kilometers off the idyllic fishing village of Kuala Besut which is 109 kilometers north of Kuala Terengganu, the capital of the state of Terengganu.
